Pepperpot & Salty follows the adventures of a quirky cat with new neighbours with underlying themes to encourage children to be curious about getting to know others who are different.
“Interactions with those who are familiar and the same as us can feel safer than getting to know those who are different,” the author said.
“This book challenges this idea and encourages children to look past the surface when meeting other children for the first time.”
The motivation for Mrs Cleall came from having family members on the autism spectrum as well as years watching children in the classroom as a teacher.
She wanted to write and illustrate the strengths and challenges with being on the spectrum in a subtle, indirect way.
The series still has two books to be released, each coming with a set of teacher and parent notes with discussion points.
BOOK LAUNCH
Pirates and live exotica animals will launch Pepperpot & Salty on December 10 at Unit 1, 2 Brown Street Kiama from 10am.
