Plans to do just that are under way – and have been since last year.
In November 2015, it was announced that Roads and Maritime Services was investigating an additional lane in both directions between Bulli Tops and Picton Road.
The work will be completed in two stages, with the first also including the realignment of curves at either end of the “big dipper” at Cataract Creek.
The northbound lane will link into the acceleration lane that already exists for heavy vehicles exiting Picton Road and heading north onto the M1 Princes Motorway.
The first stage, due to start in mid-2017, will add an extra lane from Picton Road to Bellambi Creek.
A start date for the second stage has yet to be determined.
Roads and Maritime Services are undertaking the environmental assessment for the project.
The $84 million project is a joint initiative of the state and federal governments, with each contributing $42 million.
