Illawarra rugby’s prospective rep talent in four junior age groups from under 14s are invited to attend open trials over the next two Sundays at Wollongong University.
University and Illawarriors coach Shaun McCreedy has been appointed both Illawarra Rugby Senior and Junior Director of Coaching and is implementing a program for the juniors to follow a similar structure to the successful seniors program.
‘’We want a unified approach for the kids from under 14s, so by the time they are ready for Colts and Seniors they are familiar with the brand and goals of being an Illawarra Rugby rep player,’’ McCreedy said.
The rep trials are for Under 14s, U15s, U16s and U17s with Sunday’s session at the Uni Sports Hub to include an induction session and plan for the year ahead.
McCreedy says up to 50 talented kids in each age group are expected on Sunday with the second Muster on Sunday December 4 to be trial matches before a squad of around 30 is named in each age group.
The session times this Sunday are: Under 14s – 9am-11am; Under 15s: 10am-12pm; Under 16s: 11am-1pm; Under 17s: 12pm-2pm.
The senior Illawarra rep team the Illawarriors have won the past two NSW Country Championships and several top players have gone on to represent NSW Country.
McCreedy hopes having the same structure in the senior and junior rep program means more talented players can be identified and developed.
