James Carter, the CEO of Inasmuch Community Ltd, explains its aged care services at Sussex Inlet on the NSW South Coast. “[Inasmuch] is a rather unusual name but that also partly explains what is so unique and special with the Inasmuch community,” he said.
“Inasmuch is an adverb that can mean anything from ‘in so far as…’, ‘in view of the fact that…’ This is an apt term because it says Inasmuch Community can be what you want or need it to be. As an approved provider of aged care services, we provide a range of services to people ranging from independent living, home care, assisted living through to residential aged care with care services specifically tailored for residents with special needs such as dementia or palliative care.”
The origins of the organisation date back to 1958 when Major Myrtle Townsend from the Salvation Army set up a respite service for underprivileged children. All her life Major Townsend lived by her personal motto from the New Testament Matthew 25, verse 40 “And ye King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done unto one of the least of these my brethren, so ye have done unto me.”

For the next 25 years the organisation steadily grew but in the mid 1980s the direction progressively changed from caring for children to caring for the aged. In 1989, Inasmuch became an approved aged care provider and from there grew its Retirement Village and Home Care operations.
The local Sussex community effectively owns Inasmuch. “We’re a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee and have 244 members who are almost entirely made up of local residents of Sussex Inlet,” Mr Carter said. “This has a significant impact in terms of ensuring local community engagement.
“We’re fiercely independent and wish to remain answerable only to the residents, staff, volunteers and members of Inasmuch. We maintain we can do this provided we have a strong focus on sustainability. We continually invest in training and development of our staff and in upgrading our systems and processes to ensure that we operate efficiently.”
The local Sussex community and infrastructure are a major draw-card attracting new residents to Inasmuch. “Our campus has such an idyllic setting, bordering the tranquil waters of the Inlet,” Mr Carter said. “Fishing is a popular pursuit among our independent living residents. There is also easy access to local clubs such as the Bowling Club, the RSL, the Golf Club, the Mens Shed and the Council Aquatic Centre.
“Our ‘ageing in place’ philosophy with an initial point of entry and financial outlay makes the transition from different care settings much easier and less stressful for residents. It also means they progressively develop relationships with other residents, our care staff, management and board.”
