Inspector Norm Rees, the Ambulance NSW Illawarra duty operations manager, said the driver sustained injuries to his right elbow, which will possibly require surgery.
The man, believed to be aged about 80, was travelling north on the motorway when the accident happened about 2pm.
“It appears that he may have had a tyre blowout and it’s flipped the van,” Inspector Rees said.
The man was taken to Wollongong Hospital.
The van was removed from the road and all lanes of the motorway reopened about 2.45pm.
3pm: All northbound lanes of the M1 Princes Motorway have reopened at Gwynneville after an accident.
Two northbound lanes of the motorway were closed after a van overturned.
The accident site has been cleared, and heavy traffic through the area is easing.
2.10pm: Northbound traffic on the M1 Princes Motorway is experiencing delays after a single-vehicle accident at Gwynneville.
Initial reports suggest a van has rolled near the Gipps Road overpass, blocking two of three northbound lanes.
According to the NSW Transport Management Centre, northbound traffic is heavy back to Masters Road.
Emergency services are on the scene.
