Tyrone was just 13 when he committed suicide November 22 after years of homophobic bullying at school.

The "spiritual" young boy who loved "girly things" used to play with his friend Gypsie-Lee Edwards Kennard's makeup and chose dresses for her to wear.

"Kids obviously thought that because he was like that that he could be a target for bullying," she told ABC's 7:30.

About a month before he died, Tyrone was attacked by another student outside their school, Aspley State High.

"This kid picked up a fence paling and hit him from behind and knocked him out and broke Tyrone's jaw," Gypsie-Lee said.

Aspley State High School issued a statement two days after the teenager's death saying the school was aware of the incident outside school and a complaint had been made to police.

"However, in relation to bullying, let me be very clear: no allegation of bullying against this young person was made to our school," Principal Jacquita Miller said in the statement.

Gypsie-Lee told Tyrone to tell someone at his school about the bullying.

"He said, 'they don't care'," she told ABC.

"He just felt like no-one wanted him around and he didn't belong.

"It's really hard to hear that from a child that's only 13 years old."

Tyrone begged his family not to send him back to school after the attack, his grandmother Twiggy Jones said.

"He was adamant he didn't want to go back to school," she said.

"We tried to force him but he kept saying, 'no, I don't want to go back to school'."

Gypsie-Lee said the day before Tyrone died, he was an "absolute mess".

"He was ... crying his eyes out, telling me 'everyone wants me dead'," she said.

"I said 'Tyrone, what do you mean everyone wants you dead?' he said 'the kids at school keep telling me to kill myself'.

"I was obviously gobsmacked."

She said his family and friends were still struggling to come to terms with what had happened.

"I am trying my hardest to be there for Tyrone's family, they just have so many unanswered questions," she said.

"It has been really hard."

Tyrone's mother Amanda took to Facebook to express her sorrow.

"All of this because of bullies thinking they're tough heroes," she wrote two days after her son's death.

"Now I don't have my son. Never will I ever get to see my beautiful boy alive."

Hundreds rallied for the bullied teenager on Sunday, calling for the Safe Schools program to be mandatory across Queensland.

Three quarters of same-sex attracted young people aged between 14 and 21 had experienced some form of homophobic bullying or abuse because of their sexuality and 80 per cent said it was during school, according to Safe Schools Coalition Australia.
