A Wollongong City Council crew resurfacing Tarrawanna Road ruptured an unmarked gas line at 7am on Wednesday.
A council spokesman said a “ road pavement profiler” hit the main during work on road reconstruction.
Gas company Jemena is on scene to isolate and clamp the section of gas pipe.
Fire and Rescue NSW were also called as a precautionary measure.
“Jemena has isolated and closed off the damaged gas infrastructure this morning, and can confirm that gas supply at one residential property will be shut off for the duration of repairs,” a Jemena spokesman said.
“Jemena expects to complete repairs today.”
