The island, on the western side of Windang Bridge in Lake Illawarra, is the focus of bush regerators from the Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council’s natural area restoration team Berrim Nuru, Shellharbour City Council, and Conservation Volunteers Australia.
They got to know the species there better, had a bush tucker morning tea and learned about the regeneration history on the culturally significant island.
Ben Coddington, who co-ordinates the Berrim Nuru group, said several years of regeneration on the island had been paying dividends.
Shell middens and other indigenous artefects had been being revealed by erosion, while the removal of large amounts of lantana is cleaning up the bush.
“The collaborative efforts of everyone involved to protect the natural biodiversity of the island is commendable,” Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said.
