Almost a month to the day after Irish hoop Leigh Roche had his first win in Australia for the state’s premier trainer, Englishman Charles Bishop followed suit. Bishop’s maiden win couldn’t have been in more convincing fashion.
He piloted talented filly Axiomatic – a $1.80 favourite – to a 7-¼ length demolition in the Bert Lillye Maiden Plate (1500m).
“I obviously had to take that one and it is my first winner,” Bishop said.
“The further she goes the better she will go and I think she is going to be a nice filly in time.”
Bishop had just two rides at Beaumont last weekend and one at Hawkesbury in November before cracking it for his first win. He plans to ride in Australia until February but could be swayed into staying longer.
“If I was to take off I would have to consider going back or not. We will see how things go,” Bishop said.
Bishop’s confident ride on Axiomatic will help that cause. He sat in the box seat and surged through a gap at the top of the straight to beat Theresa Bateup’s Fleeting Stryke and Gwenda Markwell trained Chilli Beauty.
