Maybe, just maybe, Wendy should use that opportunity to have a visit to see what the Illawarra region has to offer.
I wonder what folks would think if they got off at Port Kembla rather than Sydney Harbour?
- ABC radio presenter Wendy Harmer
You see, on her Thursday program, Wendy was sharing her strong opinions against cruise ships such as the recently arrived Ovation of the Seas getting prime parking position in Circular Quay.
In that debate, Wendy fired a cheap shot across the bow of Wollongong.
In her program, Wendy read a text from “Fran from Wollongong”.
Fran said: “It’s okay Sydney NIMBYs, Wollongong will happily berth the ‘ugly’ cruise ships. We love the money which flows into our economy and we need it. Send them down the coast to Port Kembla.”
To which, on air, Wendy remarked all the while laughing: “I wonder what folks would think if they got off at Port Kembla rather than Sydney Harbour?”.
Well, you can wipe that smile from your face Wendy because we can tell you.
You are clearly unaware Wendy but on October 30, this region united to welcome its first major cruise ship visit, Radiance of the Seas.
We know exactly what they think Wendy because they told us and they loved it.
In fact the Radiance of the Seas captain is on record as saying in his 40 years of sailing cruise ships around the world he had never experienced a welcome like he received in Wollongong.
So Wendy put that in your pipe and smoke it.
While not apologising for her earlier error in the program, Wendy did later take a call from .Steve from Wollongong who set Wendy straight.
So Wendy, we're not debating the Ovation of the Seas dwarfs all around it. That is clear.
But as Fran says, if you don’t want them we will have them.
So Wendy, as an olive branch, here’s an idea.
When you get back from summer break, how about you come to the wonderful region that is the Illawarra?
How about on January 18 when the Voyager of the Seas visits Wollongong for its second time in the summer, you come down, do a broadcast from our region and see exactly what passengers really think.
