Damien Blom, 36, did not enter pleas to charges of being in a police pursuit, shoplifting, two counts of using an offensive weapon to prevent arrest, reckless driving and not wearing a seatbelt during a brief appearance in Nowra Local Court on Friday.
Police documents said officers were called to Kiama about 1.15pm on Thursday following reports a man had stolen $47 worth of groceries and a kitchen knife from the Woolworths on Terralong Street.
Officers from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command allegedly spotted Blom driving away in a black Toyota Hilux on Mark Street and followed his vehicle along the Princes Highway.
They allegedly tried to pull the ute over at one stage but Blom failed to stop.
Officers started a pursuit and deployed road spikes near Berry which damaged the Toyota’s rear wheels, however, the vehicle again failed to stop.
It is alleged Blom continued along the Princes Highway before slowing and reversing into a following police vehicle.
Further along the highway he allegedly stopped again, before ramming another pursuing police car.
The ute left then scene with police halting the pursuit due to the nature of Blom's driving, court documents said.
Blom continued on the Princes Highway towards Nowra where he was allegedly seen by police holding a knife, making threatening gestures towards himself and officers.
Police eventually stopped Blom on Braidwood Road, west of Nowra and he was arrested without further incident.
He was did not apply for bail in court and it was formally refused by Magistrate Gabriel Fleming.
Blom will remain in custody until his matter returns to court on Tuesday.
