That was because when Radiance of the Seas became the first cruise ship to visit Wollongong on October 30 its captain Goran Peterson was offered a trike ride by Steve Melchior, of Just Cruisin’ Harley Tours. He loved seeing the city that way and looking down on his ship from Mount Keira so much that he called Captain Borsheim and recommended he do it as well.
Because of his duties the Voyager captain has not done an organised tour at a port of call in almost a decade but the opportunity to see such a beautiful city that way with Mr Melchior and Barry Roberts, of Just Lookin’ Trike Tours, was too good to miss. Councilor Leigh Colacino accompanied him on the ride and presented him with a Dee Kramer photo taken from the same location and a wood carving made by a local member of the indigenous community in an official welcome at Mount Keira lookout.
As soon as Caption Borsheim saw his ship from the top of the escarpment he said the view was “amazing”. He loved the photo and will hang it prominent location on the ship. Cr Calacino said the wood carving as a Welcome to Country gift to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land. “I hope there will be many more calls in the future. This is beautiful. You are friendly people. There is a lot to see and a lot to do. I look forward to coming back. Goran told me about the amazing welcome Radiance had coming in to Wollongong and I can see what he was talking about. This is special. This was definitely worth getting off the ship for. I will be telling the captain of Explorer about this now,” Captain Borsheim said.
