The convent is next door to the church, which was built in 1900 at 48-50 Park Rd, Bulli.
Council had made an interim heritage order on the convent in April 2016, following its nomination by a member of the St Joseph’s parish. Since then, the council had also moved to heritage list the two buildings together, and has the go-ahead from the State Government.
The statement of heritage values for the church says it “is of significance for Wollongong for its historic, associative, aesthetic and spiritual values, for its potential to contribute further to an understanding of ecclesiastical design in the Federation period, and as a locally representative example of a Federation Church with some rare elements.”
No less an august journal than the Illawarra Mercury said, in 1903, that the convent building was “decidedly a ornamental addition to this pretty little street”.
It said the building “reflects the greatest credit upon the contractor, Mr T Ryan of Wollongong”.
Submissions to the consultation process closed on December 21, and will be considered by the council before a final decision on the heritage listing is made.
