A Wollongong traffic control business has implemented an innovative solution to keep employees safe while managing access to large motorway construction zones such as the busy Northconnex site. The conventional method has involved a traffic controller standing with a stop sign. But despite high visibility clothing D&D Traffic Management decided that was less than ideal. The Wollongong business looked at ways to improve worker safety and implemented an innovative access control solution. D&D is using a remote controlled portable boom gate developed by Traffic & Access Solutions. The Portaboom provides a physical barrier for entry to the main Northconnex site allowing the traffic controller to stand behind a concrete safety barrier.

Much of the work on Northconnex is being done at night to minimise traffic disruptions and D&D Traffic Management managing director Robert Cazzolli said keeping its traffic controllers out of harms way is extremely important.
Mr Cazzolli said the Wollongong business was providing access control to the Northconnex site for at least another six months and was pleased to find an industry solution which means traffic controllers no longer need to stand in the direct line of traffic.
“We care about our people’s safety and we will do everything we possibly can to safeguard the mum’s, dad’s, aunties, uncles and grandparents that make up our employees,” he said.
“D&D Traffic Management is committed to devising new and better ways of doing things to make our services safer for everyone. We encourage and challenge everyone in the industry to strive to achieve this.”
