Sass the cat was separated from her family following a “car-surfing” incident in August last year.
“She was sitting on top of the car, my husband didn’t realise and he started driving,” Linda Harley said.
“He was slowing down near the round-about at the bowling club when he saw her on the bonnet. She jumped off and bolted.”
The ex-Ulladulla resident said the family spent weeks searching for Sass and made several appeals on social media for the communities help to find their feline friend.
“We searched hard for her,” she said. “We looked all around the area, had friends looking and we posted it all over social media. “After a few weeks we thought she had either found a new home or was dead.”
On December 27, Mrs Harley’s daughter Sarah received a message on Facebook from a lady who said she had found a cat and thought it might be Sass.
“Tuesday morning someone got in touch and said they found her,” Mrs Harley said. “They saw her on Monday night down near the primary school. They were able to pat her, but she ran away.”
The family hoped the sighting was fur-real but without a picture it was hard to be paw-sitive.
On Tuesday evening Mrs Harley’s son Micah was scrolling through Facebook when he noticed a post that someone had found a “very affectionate” cat.
Micah immediately recognised Sass’s distinctive white socks and knew it was her.
“Someone else found her down in Green Street,” Mrs Harley said. “We think she’s been living in the bush behind the primary school.
“My theory is she was eating the food scraps, but with the kids being on holidays the scraps weren’t there anymore so she had to come out searching for something to eat.”
Mrs Harley said the family are very excited to have Sass home and amazed by the timing.
The family were due to move to their new house, 600 kilometres away, on the NSW North Coast the following day.
“We were due to leave for our new house on Wednesday but Sarah and I stayed longer so we could get Sass and have her settle in,” Mrs Harley said.
“She is a little bit skittish. Our other cat is her sister [she] has settled in fine, but Sass doesn’t want to go outside.
“She has always been an outdoors cat, but now she is very wary. She seems very happy to be indoors. She sleeps in our daughter’s bedroom every night and wants lots snuggles and pats.”
