Kiama council recently resolved to dedicate the stage in Hindmarsh Park as the “Orry-Kelly Stage” in recognition of the late former Kiama resident.
Orry George Kelly was born in Kiama in 1897 and attended Kiama Primary School. He moved to New York in 1921 to follow his love of the theatre, but soon became a set and costume designer.
In the 1930’s he moved to Hollywood and was the chief costume designer at Warner Bros. for more than a decade.
During his career Kelly designed costumes for actresses such as Rosalind Russell, Bette Davis and Natalie Wood and was the recipient of three Oscars for costume design.
He won Oscars for his work on An American in Paris (1952), Les Girls (1958) and Some Like It Hot (1960).
He was also the subject of the 2015 documentary Women He’s Undressed. The film is based on Kelly’s tell-all memoir, Women I’ve Undressed. Kelly’s memoir was written before his death in 1964.
