But WA were not to be denied and produced an irresistible two-minute period, scoring three goals, including Emma Reid with the winner.
However, NSW were far more ruthless second-up, firing 23 shots to one, as Claire Rieck led the way with four goals, after they’d scored four in the first five minutes of play.
The men’s team suffered a huge early scare, before fighting back to win 4-3.
Western Australia’s Matthew Claxton stunned the Blues, who have won the past eight national titles in a row, with two goals in three minutes.
But it was Olympic representative striker Kieran Govers who found the late winner, as NSW prevailed 4-3 at Illawarra Hockey Centre.
NSW had taken the lead by half-time, as Illawarra representatives Jack Hayes, Flynn Ogilvie and Blake Govers scored in quick fire succession. But the game went down to the wire, after Joel Carroll equalised for WA in the 32nd minute.
Flynn Ogilvie ensured NSW finished day one with two victories, scoring two, as Heath Ogilvie and Simon Beaton also converted to beat Queensland 4-2.
