Mr Abbott called into the Market Street bike shop earlier this week for a quick repair.
“[It was] minor work, just a small five-minute job, so we fixed that up for him and then he was on his way,” owner Peter McGuinn said, but didn’t disclose details of the problem.
Mr Abbott, the Member for Warringah, told staff he was riding down the coast.
“I guess you’re always a bit stunned; you double-take when someone walks in and you recognise them,” Mr McGuinn said of the former PM’s unexpected arrival.
The Illawarra visit wasn’t Mr Abbott’s first; he stopped in Kiama while on a charity bike ride in September.
