Initial reports indicate a 26-year-old man was shot in the arm on Galong Crescent about 9.40am.
The man was taken by road ambulance to Wollongong Hospital under police escort with a nine millimetre gunshot wound to his right arm.
Detectives have established a crime scene on Galong Crescent, which remains partially cordoned off.
They are also examining properties on Glenora Place and Gareema Avenue.
A Gareema Avenue resident told the Mercury she heard two gunshots spaced several minutes apart.
“I was sitting inside and I heard a loud noise and I thought it was just the backfiring of a car,” she said.
“I went outside a few minutes later and heard another loud noise.
“It was a gunshot, and I heard a car drive off up the road.
“Police were next door looking at footprints because the person that was shot had run through their backyard.”
Another resident, Shaun O’Donnell, said he saw police lead a man away in handcuffs from Glenora Place about 10.15am.
“They [police] were searching the backyard behind this house and my house,” he said.
“They said something about someone going through [the yards].
Mr O’Donnell heard a loud noise in the neighbourhood about 9.30am.
“I was sitting out having a cuppa and I heard like a firecracker go off,” he said.
The streets had earlier been alive with the sounds of multiple parties, he said.
“I got home about two o’clock this morning and I could hear a little bit of fighting going on. I think there could have been a party there, a party over the back and maybe over even there," he said, indicating to Galong Cres, Glenora Place and Gareema Avenue.
“It’s not good at all. It’s fairly quiet around this area. There’s nothing bad going on, that I see. This is the first time I’ve seen something bad of that nature, where there’s a firearm possibly involved There’s obviously some disagreements out there.”
The man’s injury is not life threatening. He remains in a stable condition at Wollongong Hospital.
