Previously named Imagine the eatery changed its name a year ago and the recognition is a reflection of the standard it has maintained for the whole 12 months.
It came as Marisa Tatangelo-Ferri and her daughter Nataly Sanchez were preparing for Table 426’s first anniversary on February 3.
Imagine started eight years ago at Wiseman Park Bowling Club before moving to the present location five years ago. There was previously a pizza Italian restaurant on the Princes Highway site in Corrimal.
Marisa Tatangelo-Ferri has many years experience working as a head chef in the Illawarra and overseas.
“I was the first woman to be a head chef in Gibralter,” she said.
“In 2002 we came back. We were there for five years.”
Ms Tatangelo-Ferri was inspired to cook by her mother Margherita Tatangelo’s traditional Italian style cooking using fresh vegetables from the garden.
And Ms Sanchez followed her mum into the industry after studying digital media for a while. The mother and daughter team had cooked together since Ms Sanchez was 14.
But after completing her apprenticeship in 2011 Nataly moved overseas and worked in one of Jamie Oliver’s restaurants in London. Since she has returned the two have worked side-by-side as a great team who welcome input from Mrs Tatangelo.
“Now we pretty much do everything together. We change out menu every season and out set menu every week,” she said.
Table 426 has continued the tradition of making food with the freshest produce possible including some that still comes from Mrs Tatangelo’s garden.
Ms Tatangelo-Ferri started her career in Wollongong where she worked in the Spanish Club and other restaurants for a while before moving to Spain. When she returned there was one part of her career where she and all three of her children, including Jon Marco Sanchez and Jessica Sanchez, worked at the Lagoon at the same time. Table 426 won a hat from the Australian Good Food and Travel Guide in early January. It comes after Imagine took out the reader’s choice award two years ago.
“This is really big for us. I cried. There are different judges. They come two or three times a year. You don’t know who they are and you never know they are coming,” Ms Tatangelo-Ferri said.
The goal has been to create a happy environment with good food. Table 426 has both modern Australian and Spanish cuisine.
