The desire to bolster an expanding stable and the lure of lucrative prize pools in years to come made the Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sales a ‘ticket in the lottery’ worth investing in, according to Rob Price.

The Illawarra and South Coast trainer, who trains alongside son Luke and recently opened up a second base at Kembla Grange, was one of the only stables based in the region who were active at the first sale of 2017.
The stable spent $180,000 on three yearlings, including purchasing an $80,000 colt by Cox Plate winner Shamus Award out of Intergalatic.
Price was ‘really happy’ with the new additions.
He said the stable targeted staying types which they hope to syndicate and potentially target at the Magic Millions Carnival in coming years.
All purchases at the sale are eligible to run at the multi million dollar Gold Coast Magic Millions race day from the following year.
It was a selling point for Price.
“You can go up every year until they are seven years-old and race for a few million. It is a ticket in the lottery,” he said.
“People don’t buy staying types because they are impatient but there is two races at the Magic Millions carnival which suit horses that will get a trip. But just because you buy staying types that doesn’t mean they won’t be precocious after six months. It is a very early sale the Magic Millions, but it is definitely worth the lottery ticket.”
The stable also purchased a colt by multiple Group 1 winner All Too Hard out of Allez Wonder ($70,000) as well as a colt by Reset out of She’s Red Hot ($30,000).
