And they’ve done so being greeted by a sea of blue shirts with smiling faces.
The IRT cruise ambassador program was celebrated at a special function at the Wollongong Golf Club and the volunteers thanked for devoting their time at showcasing this region.
The ambassador program may get more praise yet, up for a nomination in Thursday night’s Wollongong’s Australia Day honours.
In addressing the function, Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery paid tribute to the 500 people who volunteered as ambassadors.
“We would have welcomed something like 11,500 visitors,’’ the Lord Mayor said.
“That is a lot of hands you have shaken. Congratulations on a mammoth effort.
“You have created a model of welcoming and engagement that is the envy of the world.
“This is what makes Wollongong and the Illawarra a great place to visit. You have helped to create …. more than an image. It is a reality.”
You only had to walk around the central business district on Wednesday to understand the impact the cruise ships have had on the local economy.
People came out on ou Facebook page to recognise what a wonderful success the Illawarra’s first cruise ship season has been.
“Wollongong rocks. These cruise ships are great for the local economy. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Go the Gong,” Paul posted.
“Lots of shopping in the mall today love the cruise boats and big thanks to the volunteers,” Jennie responded.
“I think inviting the cruise ships is a great initiative. Thank you everyone involved in making this happen,” Rod posted.
This has set tourism on a new course for this region.
There will be plenty of people who will claim credit for attracting cruise ships.
Yet no-one can claim the credit of Wollongong Cr and Destination Wollongong board member Leigh Colacino who turned a dream into a reality with sheer doggedness and determination.
A close second would be Destination Wollongong’s Mark Sleigh, his team and his board.
What a wonderful legacy to have on the community they serve. Congratulations and may many ships follow.
