In what is expected to be his last year before turning professional, Smyth conceded three-and-two to Scottish rising star Robert MacIntyre at Melbourne’s Yarra Yarra Golf Club.
Smyth, who will spend much of 2017 playing at elite UK and US tournaments, finished runner-up at last year’s tournament.
He only just made the cut at the tournament after carding seven-over for the first two rounds.
But difficult conditions last week meant he snuck into the last 64 players.
Continuing a nerve-racking week, Smyth outlasted Kiwi Ryan Chisnall to win on the 19th hole, before beating Isaac Noh and Josh Armstrong on Friday.
Smyth showed his emormous potential on the professional tours, when he was tied for 28th at his first appearance at the Australian Open last year.
