Assistant coach Dean Young, who with 2010 premiership teammate Ben Hornby took the reins at the Auckland Nines without Paul McGregor, confirmed the Dragons would have a youthful look to the pre-season contest against Wests Tigers.
“There’s a couple of big name players not playing, Josh Dugan and Tyson Frizell,” he said.
“They’re going to be playing in the Charity Shield the weekend after.
“It’s going to be a young squad, a squad the coaching staff are excited to see play.
I’m sure the fans will be excited to see the likes of Jai Field run around, they’ve seen what he can produce over at the Nines, so let’s see how he goes in 13 versus 13.”
St George Illawarra were knocked out in the group stages of the Nines, losing to Manly and Parramatta, before beating the Warriors on Sunday.
Field is one of four options to play halfback for the Dragons this season, as well as Illawarra Cutters premiership hero Shaun Nona, experienced former Raiders player Josh McCrone and Kurt Mann, who scored the game-winning try against the Warriors.
