While most native animals are well adapted to changes in climate, they can still suffer in heatwaves, particularly if the heat is unusual for an area.
Perhaps the best thing people can do is leave out a dish of fresh cool water, particularly if you live near the bush.
It can also be important to check smaller animals can’t get stuck in containers left around the property.
One of the animals most susceptible to the effects of heat stress is the flying fox, which struggles during very hot days of low humidity.
If you spot flying foxes, young or old, the best thing to do is call WIRES’ wildlife rescue line on 1300 094737, or use the online rescue form.
