Police are investigating the fatal collision on Five Islands Road, which happened about 3.50pm on Wednesday.
Emergency services were called to the scene after reports of a car fire, with reports the car were well alight.
Police said their initial investigations suggested several cars were involved in the crash, before one car caught fire resulting in a person dying inside the vehicle.
Duty officer Jack Brown, at the scene, said the car had “been travelling west on Five Islands Road when it collided with the roundabout, hit the telegraph pole and the traffic sign”.
“[It came down] and hit the road and burst into flames,” he said.
“The driver of the vehicle perished in that incident.”
He said a truck and another car was hit by the car which was destroyed by fire, but there were no other injuries as a result of the crash.
Police said investigators “haven’t been able to determine the sex of the body” or the driver’s identity because the person was so badly burnt.
Officers from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
A crime scene has been established and Five Islands Road is closed in both directions.
A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
