The man perished inside the burning wreck of a Holden Statesmen on Five Islands Road about 3.50pm Wednesday, as stunned onlookers stood powerless to help.
A witness to the crash estimates the car was travelling at 150km/h when it ran directly over the Glastonbury Avenue roundabout and launched skyward.
Incredibly, it flew in, then out, the back of a semi-trailer – passing through the canopy – before slamming into the ground and again tumbling into the air.
“He flipped around three times,” the witness told the Mercury.
“It was like a scene out of a Hollywood blockbuster.
“The height he got was unbelievable. He went that high that he hit the massive street signs.
“I never want to witness anything like it again.”
On Thursday, police continued their efforts to formally identify the man, Lake Illawarra Inspector Jack Brown said.
“At this stage we have a gentleman who hasn’t returned home, who we believe may be the gentleman involved.”
We are going through the routine process of obtaining DNA so we can formally identify him.”
The circumstances leading to the crash – including the possibility that the car involved had been stolen – remain subject to police inquiry.
