Police were called to an apartment complex on Northcliffe Drive about 7pm on Sunday, following reports a female had been hit with a hammer.
Acting Inspector Lee Ingmire, from Lake Illawarra police, said a 24-year-old woman was found on the grass at the front of the complex suffering a number of injuries.
The woman was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to Wollongong Hospital.
Acting Inspector Ingmire said the man who allegedly assaulted the woman was identified in one of the units.
“There was a number of people at the unit complex who witnessed the assault, that were obviously trying to get to the male,” she said.
“Police attended and after some time entered the unit and arrested the male inside.”
The man was later taken to Lake Illawarra police station, where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He was refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court on Monday.
