UoW has been named Australia’s most vegan-friendly university, by the international group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
The food options available at the Keiraville campus stand out as the best among the nation’s universities, PETA has announced.
We’re not talking about part-way animal avoiders who have cheese on their lentil burger. That’s just a plain old vegetarian.
The vegan goes the whole hog – no hog, no fish, nothing at all that comes from an animal. Sometimes this extends to avoiding leather and honey (to wear, or eat).
Saying “animals are not ours to eat” PETA has described the standout meals at UoW’s many food outlets.
The UniBar’s Faux Schizzle My Schnitzel burger replaces the meat with a soy and vegetable concoction that has won plenty of fans, as does the Fillet No Fish burger.
“In addition, the IGA on campus is well stocked with a variety of faux meats, vegan sausage rolls, dairy-free dips, and vegan mayonnaise,” PETA said, praising the chickpea curry and tofu banh mi at Little Curry House, rice paper rolls at Okuma Sushi, salad at The Yard, and the Veggie Delite at Subway.
It’s far from the hot chip roll with which vegan students of a decade or two ago had to content themselves.
Out for Lunch and Espresso Warriors offer raw vegan cakes (made for, not from, vegans) and Boost Juice has dairy-free smoothies.
When she studied at UoW last year Alison Swann said she noticed how much the range of vegan options improved during 2016.
Ms Swann, vegan for five years, said it created excitement among vegans both on campus and off.
“I think Wollongong as a whole had a gap there in the market, and UoW filled that gap,” she said.
“And now with the IGA supermarket opening on campus there’s that good range there, and vegan lasagne. Thank god, Wollongong has vegan lasagne!”
