The versatile Matthews has been a go-to man for coach Paul McGregor for his ability to cover multiple positions off the bench but the 28-year-old is facing a long stint on the sidelines after suffering the injury on Sunday.
Matthews was stretchered off after what appeared to be an innocuous tackle in the first half and McGregor confirmed the extent of the injury post-match.
“He’s got a dislocated hip unfortunately,” McGregor said.
“It’s something that’s terrible to come out of the game. We haven’t had much luck there, we lost young Drew [Hutchison] before Christmas and Kiti [Glymin] just after Christmas and now we’ve lost [Matthews] in a trial so our top 25’s now down to 22.
“That obviously hurts because they’re all quality players.”
