The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was pulled over by police for a random inspection in a Thrifty hire car along Purr Purr Avenue just before 3pm on August 9 last year.
Officers noticed her hands were visibly shaking as she handed over her driver’s licence and when they asked her to get out of the car, she tried to take her handbag with her, telling police she was in a hurry because she had to pick her child up from school.
The woman was detained at the scene while police searched the car.
They found nothing suspicious in the interior cabin of the vehicle, however decided to expand their search to the car boot.
Inside, they found a black coloured bag containing a pistol sitting on top of the spare tyre.
The woman denied any knowledge of the bag or its contents.
The pistol was discovered to be a replica, however police said it had the weight and design of a real weapon.
The woman was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where she made alternative arrangements for her child to be collected from school.
She was charged with gun and drug possession.
She subsequently pleaded guilty to both charges during a recent appearance in Wollongong Local Court and will face sentencing next month.
