It’s the only New South Wales venue for his fleeting Australian tour, with the local show expected to draw a crowd of up to 17,000 fans, the majority from outside of area.
“My band and I are really looking forward to playing [in Australia] again in September and this tour will be even more memorable because it will be the first time I have ever played in Wollongong,” Sir Elton said.
“If the audience in The Gong is anything like those at all of the other shows we have done in New South Wales over the years, everyone will surely be in for a wonderful night!”
It will be the first show ever in the region for the Benny and the Jets singer.
The tour will feature iconic hits and classic album tracks from his five-decade career, including a selection of songs from his album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
The backdrop will be the night sky with WIN Stadium transformed into a pristine open air venue with stage setup at the southern end with seating across the field and on the hill.
Sir Elton has played more than 4000 concerts in more than 80 countries, including 186 in Australia since first visiting our shores in October of 1971.
Promoter Michael Chugg said Sir Elton loved Australia and Australians, calling it an “ongoing affair”.
Sit Elton is one of the top-selling solo artists of all time, with 38 gold and 31 platinum or multi-platinum albums and he has sold more than 250 million records worldwide.
He also holds the record for the biggest-selling single of all time, Candle in the Wind 1997.
The band he’s bringing downunder includes drummer Nigel Olsson, part of Elton's original three-piece band, musical director and guitarit Davey Johnstone (who first recorded with Elton in 1971 and joined the band in a year later), bassist Matt Bissonette, percussionist John Mahon and Kim Bullard on keys.
It’s the third out of four concerts of the tour to be announced, with two others to be staged in regional Queensland.
Tickets for the September 24 event will go on sale Tuesday, March 14.
