Emergency services were called to the walking track about 1.30pm after an alarm was raised that a 16-year-old boy had fallen more than 10 metres.
A rescue helicopter was tasked to the scene as paramedics moved in on foot.
One of the paramedics broke his left ankle as he made his way to the scene.
NSW Ambulance Illawarra duty operations manager Inspector Norm Rees said the injured paramedic’s colleague continued down the track to the boy.
A paramedic and a doctor were lowered from the helicopter to the boy, who assessed him as being in a critical condition, Inspector Rees said.
The teenager was treated for a serious head injury, before being winched to the helicopter and flown to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition.
The paramedic also received treatment and was taken to the same winching spot, where he was lifted into a helicopter.
He was flown to St George Hospital for further treatment.
Inspector Rees said the teenager’s injuries appeared to be the result of misadventure.
“Apparently, the story was he was trying to climb up a tree for a better advantage of jumping into the pool and the branch has broken and he has fallen and hit his head,” he said.
Fire and Rescue personnel also assisted during the emergency operation.
