The “Clear the Shelter” campaign is dropping the adoption fee to $29 for all animals – ponies, pigs, kittens and senior citizen greyhounds – who are in desperate need for a “forever home”.
Illawarra shelter manager Judith Wright was worried the special adoption rate may entice “impulse buyers” but wanted to remind people pets are for life.
“They need to think of whether they have the financial ability to care for them, whether they have the time to give to them,” Ms Wright said.
For example, horses, such as part-Arab Cruse, have ongoing vet treatment for teeth and other maintenance and can become quite expensive.
While dogs and cats also need regular vet treatment through the year, such as for vaccinations, she said.
“People need to take that into account, they need to take in the time they’ve got, like if they’ve got enough time to walk a dog. Where they’re living … that they’re not going to move in six months and struggle to find somewhere that will take a pet,” Ms Wright said.
“If people are going to take advantage of the $29, just please make sure they have really thought about it and are prepared to commit to this animal for a lifetime.”
Currently 596 animals are in need of adoption statewide, some of which have been waiting more than three months.
Normal adoption procedures apply including desexing and microchipping, vaccinations, veterinary checks and behavioural procedures, as well as a one-on-one with prospective new adoptive parents to ensure all animals go to a great home.
All shelters are offering a discounted adoption rate this weekend only. To see who’s available, visit: www.adoptapet.com.au
