Fire crews were called to the abandoned timber house on Crown Street, near the Gilmore Street intersection, at 10.08pm.
They arrived to find the house well alight and it took them more than an hour to bring it under control.
While they battled the blaze neighbouring homes were evacuated and Crown Street was closed for more than an hour, with at least three fire engines parked on the road.
Due to the home being abandoned, police believe the fire may have been deliberately lit.
Crime scene investigations officers were at the home on Sunday morning searching for evidence.
Anyone with any information on the fire is asked to call Wollongong Detectives or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
