Catholic schools in the Diocese of Wollongong have about 20,000 reasons to celebrate Catholic Schools Week this year – each one being a child enrolled in a Catholic school across the Macarthur, Illawarra, Southern Highlands and Shoalhaven regions.
This year alone, an additional 500 new students were welcomed into one of the Diocese’s 38 Catholic schools.
Starting school is a significant step for all children and their families. As one way to support them, the Diocese of Wollongong began a Transition to School Playgroup program last year, which was piloted in six schools.

Children and parents attended a playgroup at the school, twice a week, for a period of at least five weeks. The program was so successful, that it will be extended to include schools in Dapto, Fairy Meadow, Warrawong and West Wollongong.
The program aims to develop familiarity and a sense of belonging and connection for children and their families, as well as enhancing the children’s social, learning and communication skills through play-based experiences.
“Playgroup allowed the children and their families an early opportunity to establish positive relationships with one another, and with some of the staff at the school, building a sense of welcome and community,” playgroup program co-ordinator Rebecca Hill said.
Enrolments open in March for schools in the Diocese of Wollongong. To find out more visit a school or see www.dow.catholic.edu.au.
