In these economic times, families might compromise on the brand of cereals they purchase or hold back on going out to a meal at a restaurant. However, when it comes to the education of children, they want only the best for them. There can be no compromise because what is decided now will impact on their futures.
St Mary Star of the Sea College has played a significant role in the story of Wollongong. With a 144-year history of educating girls in the Benedictine tradition, St Mary’s has seen many prominent young women proudly take their places in the community in the spirit of service and excellence. The College motto, “I am born for higher things” encourages girls not only to strive always to achieve their personal best but to contribute towards creating a more just society. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and this year’s Project Compassion theme is ‘Love Thy Neighbour’. Students have created their own ‘heart’.

At St Mary’s, the girls take centre stage and do not have to compete with boys. They can dominate in maths, science, technology and sport, which in co-ed situations can be male domains. Leadership skills are nurtured from the moment girls enter the college and they are supported and encouraged throughout a girls’ school career. St Mary’s focus is on helping girls to be the best person they can be and providing them with support in the academic, pastoral, social, spiritual and emotional aspects of education.
