In November last year truck accidents within days of each other shut down the M1 Princes Motorway up and down Mt Ousley.

Another truck accident on the motorway in October and a February truck fire also caused traffic nightmares.

The spate of accidents has sparked RMS into action.

“Roads and Maritime Services is currently reviewing the management of Mount Ousley to improve safety in connection to recent incidents,” an RMS spokesman said.

“A number of safety improvements are currently being considered including enhanced speed management and better early warning aides for motorists, and the feasibility and application of new technology over both the short, medium and long term for heavy and light vehicles.”

A point to point speed camera to monitor all traffic could be an option after an apparent softening of the government’s opinion on their use for speeding cars.

Former Roads Minister Duncan Gay was opposed to using them on anything but heavy vehicles.

But when asked about her stance new Roads Minister Melinda Pavey did not state she would be following Mr Gay’s approach.

“Heavy vehicles are targeted because they’re often involved in serious crashes,” Ms Pavey said.

“The NSW Government is dealing with an unexplained rise in deadly crashes involving light vehicles last year.

“I’m working closely with the Centre for Road Safety to design a campaign that drives home the message about the dangers of speed and fatigue.”
