Almost 150 years old, but looking better than ever. Welcome to Austinmer Public School and their 2017 sesquicentenary - the celebrations that they have planned are all for their local community.
The motto for the 150th is “Celebrating 150 years of Providing Outstanding Public Education”.
“Everyone is welcome to attend,” Austinmer Public School P&C secretary Samantha Soster said.
“On the official side, there will be speeches from our current principal Paul Petersen, past principals and special guests.
“We will officially launch our 150th year book, there’ll be raffles, silent and loud auctions, a photograph walk and a photo booth.

“Local identity and proud Austinmer Public School parent Scott McRae will be our MC for the evening which will include local artist performances and an internationally renowned guest artist.
“Other celebrations include a dinner to be held on April 1 at Headlands Austinmer Beach for the celebrations, a formal assembly on the Austinmer Public School’s actual birthday on April 6, which includes the unveiling of the tile wall, the history of the school, opening our time capsule, and the junior choir will perform.
“Finally, on Friday April 7, we are having a big birthday party for students and staff.”
Austinmer Public School was founded in 1866 by a board of patrons, headed by James Hicks who was one of the original settlers in Austinmer.
The school was originally known by the name of North Bulli and WF King was appointed the first teacher in 1866.
On April 6, 1867, the school was transferred from the National System to the NSW Public System and renamed Austinmer Public School.
The school follows the same curriculum as every other school in NSW yet with teachers who genuinely care for their students, they have an exceptionally powerful and dynamic school where everyone can enjoy their learning success.
Austinmer Public School is a SERFER school where their core values of Safety, Effort, Respect, Friendship, Empathy and Resilience are taught and reinforced in all aspects of the school life.
They are also fortunate to have a dedicated and energy-filled P&C Association that supports their students and teachers.
“Regarding premises, we look forward to having our southern crib wall replaced and then installing some brand new playground equipment to improve student comfort and engagement,” Ms Soster said.
“We are also hoping to have some airconditioning placed into classrooms - most of which are almost 100 years old.”
There are many other exciting events planned for the students throughout 2017.
