ST GEORGE Illawarra players have welcomed Warriors half Kieran Foran’s expected return to the game this week, but the former Kiwi Test captain shouldn’t expect any favours at Kogarah on Sunday.

Foran was named in the No. 21 jersey in Warriors coach Stephen Kearney’s squad for the clash on Tuesday and, should he make it onto UOW Jubilee Oval, will play his first NRL game since round 12 last year.
Foran has battled well-publicised personal issues over the past 12 months, prompting to walk away from a $5 million deal with Parramatta in July last year.
He’s since linked with Warriors on a one-year deal, though the NRL sought assurances that the 26-year-old had adequately confronted issues with alcohol and gambling – and ended a worrisome association with colourful gambling identity Eddie Hayson – before registering his contract in March.
He was cleared to play in the Warriors’ round three clash with Canterbury but didn’t take part in the fixture at Dunedin as he battled a niggling shoulder problem.
The shoulder will no doubt be tested by the Dragons big men on Sunday but prop Paul Vaughan said it would be great to see Foran back playing rugby league.
“Obviously he’s a quality player and he’ll bring a lot to their team experience-wise and he’s got a smart footy head as well,” Vaughan said.
“It’s one of the biggest things you see in rugby league, a lot of boys deal with some off-field pressures and all that kind of stuff.
“It’s always good to see when they come full circle and you see them enjoying their footy again because there is a lot of pressure there.
“It’s such a physically and mentally draining game and you’ve just got to find that balance and I hope he’s found that balance and he’s enjoying his footy and his life.
“We’ll prepare like he’s playing and we’ll see how he goes on the day. He’ll probably be a bit rusty, he’s been out for quite a while so hopefully for us he just warms into it this week and in the next couple weeks he gets back to his best.”
The Warriors have looked largely out of sorts in a 1-2 start to the season and currently sit 15th on the ladder following their 24-12 loss to the Bulldogs last week. Their past two losses have come largely without Roger Tuivasa-Sheck who left the field with concussion early in the club’s round two clash with Melbourne two weeks ago.
He still needs to satisfy concussion protocols this week to take his place against the Dragons but, should he tick all the boxes, the Warriors will boat their much-hyped Kiwi Test spine alongside Shaun Johnson and Isaac Luke.
It will be a tough match-up for a fledgling Dragons spine that’s still finding it’s feet with new hooker Cameron McInnes and Josh McCrone in the No. 7, but McCrone said his side is embracing the challenge.
“It’s good to see [Foran] back in the game. Obviously he’s had a bit of a tough time and hopefully this shows he’s coming through the other side,” McCrone said.
“There’s a fair chance he’ll be playing on my edge so hopefully we’ll test that shoulder out with big Friz [Tyson Frizell] running at him. There’s a fair bit of pressure there as well.
“They’ve talked a lot about how they have the Kiwi spine now and they have had a fair bit of success at [Test] level so it’ll be interesting to see if they can translate that back to the NRL.”
