The council on Thursday removed the flowers placed after the death of the 11-year-old, who died last week after being washed down a stromwater drain at Riley Park.
“I have spoken with Ryan’s family about the flowers that have been left in Riley Park and how they want them handled,’’ Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said. “By collecting them and reusing them in this way, we’re able to see this symbolism live on.’’
Council staff have collected any cards and other items, which will be given to Ryan’s family.
No decision has been made where the tree will be planted and the council said staff would talk to Ryan’s family about possible locations in the future.
