To others it has been the perfect storm to produce the most spectacular fungi as the harsh, dry heat subsides into the Autumn calendar, making way for wet forests.

Fungi are the second most diverse group of organisms in the world, with NSW supporting more than 6000 macrofungi varieties (large species visable to the eye).

A short trip to our escarpment will quickly support that theory - this time of year, places such as Mount Kembla Summit support a beautiful array of colours, sizes and shapes.

Let's preserve this precious resource. With all native environments, it's important to stay on trail and not disturb the fungi or other flora and fauna.

A word of caution: never handle and eat wild fungi. Many varieties are very poisonous and even a small amount may cause death. Only consume and handle mushrooms from a grocery store.
