This is part of the reason the roundabout at the southern end of the proposed upgrade – where the McDonald’s at Bomaderry is located – will get extra lanes.
This means a left and right-turn lanes for vehicles leaving Moss Vale Road and entering the Princes Highway.
Kiama MP Gareth Ward said that, while it was preparatory work for the third stage of the upgrade, the first two stages had also increased the need for it to be done.
“As the upgrades progress, we’re seeing more traffic come down the highway,” Mr Ward said.
“Berry, even with construction work under way we’re still seeing very, very strong flows of traffic down the Princes Highway.
“When Berry’s finished, you’ll see a lot less people going down the ‘sand track’, which is the section that goes down through Gerringong.
“As traffic flows increase we need to manage pinch points. One of those is the Cambewarra Road-Princes Highway-Moss Vale Road roundabout.”
Mr Ward said he and South Coast MP Shelley Hancock were pushing the state government for funds but he said Canberra also needed to come to the party.
“Their lack of action is despicable on the Princes Highway,” he said.
“The federal government have not invested a cent between Albion Park and Bomaderry.
“I think local federal representatives need to push harder for funding for the Princes Highway.”
