When Roads and Maritime Services closed the pass from September to December last year to install the first stage of rock fall fencing, council had to put a project on ice until this year.

The project was work on three sections of the Grand Pacific Walk, which Roads and Maritime Services had refused permission to go ahead as it would take place along Lawrence Hargrave Drive.

That was one of the two detour routes during the Bulli Pass closure, which were not to have any sort of roadwork carried out during that period.

The Grand Pacific Walk work would have required the closing of a lane on Lawrence Hargrave Drive.

“Roads and Maritime Services will not permit works on Lawrence Hargrave Drive while Bulli Pass is closed,” a Wollongong City Council spokesman said.

So council delayed the start of the works to the middle of this year, before Roads and Maritime Services announced the dates for the second closure of Bulli Pass – August 28 to November 3.

“Works on the Grand Pacific Walk project are programmed to commence mid-2017,” the council spokesman said.

“However, works will not occur during August to November due to the Bulli Pass closure.”

The spokesman said any planning work along Lawrence Hargrave Drive for the Grand Pacific Walk would take into account the upcoming closure.

“Council continues to work with Roads and Maritime Services and liaises with them regularly to ensure that planning for the works on Lawrence Hargrave Drive incorporate the planned Bulli Pass closure dates,” he said.

The spokesman said that there were no other major projects from council that would be affected by the closure of the pass.

He said other council projects to be carried out in the northern suburbs in the back half of this year could still go ahead without impacting on the detour routes scheduled during the closure period.
