Wollongong Central has set up the electric vehicle charging station in the basement level of the P1 car park on Market Street.
While the move comes before electric cars have reached much market penetration, it is an acknowledgement of the rising interest in electric cars as people seek low-emission alternatives for their private transport.
Up to three electric vehicles can recharge at the same time while the owners go shopping.
Wollongong Central regional general manager Antony Keenan said the charging station was in response to the changing needs of customers.
“Hybrid cars are increasingly common but it takes time to recharge them and we can provide drivers with the confidence that they can recharge as part of their journey or daily shopping,” Mr Keenan said.
