Wollongong singer-songwriter Hannah Park will support Evans at his upcoming Bulli show after he announced an all-female line-up of supports.
“Don’t feel like you need to pat me on the back,” Evans said, adding he’s been doing it for several years now as a rule.
“In entertainment, in life, the female voice is not heard as much as the male voice. On a political level, this is one tiny thing I can do.
“The other side of it … it’s a night out for me too. It’s my Friday night or Saturday night out and I’m a happier person if I’m not in some kind of sausage party. If I’m at a party, I’m a happier person if there’s a nice gender balance.”
Despite being on the Australian music scene since 1994 Evans said being a full-time musician has just as much pressure as when he started.
“I turn 40 this year, I’ve gone through a stage in my life where I feel pretty proud of the work that I’ve done over the last 20-or-so years and I don’t feel like I’m having to f***ing prove to the world I’m worthy,” he said.
“But as far as my life goes, it’s way harder now because I have kids and a mortgage and all this stuff to worry about. Being a self-employed musician is really, really difficult.”
However, don’t expect Evans to quit touring anytime soon as he says he still loves the lifestyle and the thrill of getting up on stage.
It also pays the bills seeing as digital streaming services, like Spotify and Pandora, are “ripping off” musicians.
“As a music fan it’s a pretty awesome thing and I can see it continuing. The entire history of music is at your f***ing fingertips. Twenty years ago that concept would be insane,” Evans said.
“As a working artist, I can see the current model is totally unfair and musicians getting ripped off - that has to change.”
Bob Evans, supported by Hannah Park, plays Bulli Heritage Hotel, May 7.
