But the innovative service does more than just ‘’provide a roof over your head and food in your belly’’.
‘’It’s both those things but it is also about providing an ongoing supportive environment for people to succeed,’’ Lighthouse general manager Josh Hammann said.
‘’We are able to do this thanks to events such as Ride Around the Lake.’’
The eighth edition of the charity bike ride will be held on Saturday, May 6.
The previous seven rides have raised $90,000 for Lighthouse Youth Initiative.
‘’We believe in this program,’’ Mr Hammann said.
‘’This is not the end destination for people. It is a transitional accommodation where we want to see people in independent accommodation support themselves and also give back to the community.
‘’We do that practically by having support workers come on site who help them to cook, clean, budget and do yard work.
‘’We also provide them with fantastic volunteer opportunities as well as help them seek and find employment.’’
Studies have shown that there are 1200 people homeless on any given night in the Illawarra and more than 50 per cent of them are under the age of 25.
The ride is about ‘breaking the cycle’ of youth at risk of homelessness by raising awareness and funds.
Organisers have set a $50,000 goal this year and are hoping the People’s Bike initiative – which is sponsored by local businesses and the community – and takes pride of place at the Yallah Woolshed – will help them reach their target.
More than 500 cyclists each year have taken part in previous Ride Around the Lake events.
Mr Hammann said both the 40km and 10km rides were family-friendly.
‘’It is a safe ride and it is always beautiful weather. It is also probably the only time you can really properly circumnavigate the lake in a safe way,’’ he said.
