Stingrays veteran Michelle Carney and Blaize Kendis both scored consolations goals in a tough round one clash for Illawarra.
Sydney, who are one of the favourites to win the NSW NPL Women’s 1 final this season, were 3-1 up at half time before they continued in a rich vein of form in the second half.
Illawarra’s massive defeat was the equal biggest of the round.
The Stingrays start to the campaign will get no easier next weekend when they travel away to in-form Football NSW Institute.
The Institute smashed the Emerging Jets 6-1 to start their campaign and will host the Rays at Valentine Sports Park in round two.
