At the opening of Creative Corrimal Arts Festival in Memorial Park on Saturday morning Wollongong Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery said the Corrimal Revitalisation Action Group organised event showed what a community can do by taking the lead itself.
“This a wonderful example of a community expressing itself,” Cr Bradbery said.
“The point of the exercise is also to activate the town centre. As far as I am concerned anything that does that and engages with people is good.”
Cr Bradbery said Wollongong City Council had contributed financially to the running of Makerspaces promoting creative art.
“This is a community doing its own thing to promote itself,” he said.
“And Corrimal is very fortunate that it has this village green which creates a village feel as a focal point for its activities”.
Cr Bradbery said the chamber of commerce led by president Paul Boultwood was always very enthusiastic.
“As far as I am concerned that is what it is all about. Don’t rely on council to do everything. Council is there to facilitate not necessarily initiate,” he said.
“Spring into Corrimal is another fantastic success story in terms of the number of people who enjoy the experience. Everything that goes on here seems to have a real community spirit about it.”
Cr Bradbery said it was fantastic to see so many local people being able to express themselves and their talents and abilities creatively in such a public way.
He said it was also great to see the University of Wollongong heavily in involved in the day
“I just want to congratulate them all on their initiative with something that sets the pace for the rest of the city,” he said.
