After Anzac Day, dog walkers will be able to take their pets (on a leash only) to the beaches zoned “orange” from 4pm, instead of 6pm.
Orange zoned beaches can also be used before 9am and include parts of Stanwell Park, Scarborough-Wombarra, Thirroul, Bulli and Woonona-Bellambi beaches.
Corrimal, Towradgi-Fairy Meadow and Fisherman’s beach also have timed dog access.
However, dog owners are warned to check signage carefully before using the beaches, as council maps showing the different zones can be confusing.
In some cases beaches and headlands change from red (prohibited) to orange to green (off-leash) within a matter of metres.
As well as the dog walking change, the council’s summer beach swimming patrols will end from Wednesday.
This means only North Wollongong beach will be patrolled by council lifeguards until the start of the September school holidays.
Green Zone: Off-Leash
- This zone allows dogs off-leash at all times.
- It’s important to note that walkway access, carpark and adjoining parks and reserves are not part of the off-leash area. Dogs must be kept on leash and under effective control at all times until reaching the designated off-leash area.
Orange Zone: Timed Access
- The orange zone is a time sharing zone allowing access on the beach on leash in summer before 9am and after 6pm, and in winter before 9am and after 4pm. Summer is defined as being from September school holidays to ANZAC Day, and winter is the remainder of the year. The orange zone includes all beaches not designated as off-leash (green) or banned areas (red).
Red Zone: Prohibited
- The red zone is an area where dogs are prohibited at all times due to sites having sensitive environmental fauna and flora factors, high human population areas or for heritage reasons.
- All rock pools, rock platforms and ocean pools are red zones.
